About
modernterracegarden is an independent design blog published from Juneau, Alaska. We document terrace and rooftop garden ideas for villas — sketching layouts, comparing planter systems, and noting what tends to work in windy, wet and cooler climates.
Everything here is editorial. We share our own observations, reference points and photography inspiration so you can talk to your architect, landscaper or contractor with clearer ideas. We don't sell products, and we don't promise outcomes — plants, structures and permits all depend on your specific site.
“A terrace works when you can step out barefoot in the morning and still want to sit there at nine in the evening.”

A large terrace can feel oddly unusable when it's one flat, open plane. The fix is rarely more furniture — it's giving the space three loose "rooms" that each have a purpose and a slightly different floor, ceiling or edge.
1. The dining room. Place it closest to the interior kitchen or stair access, so carrying things out stays easy. A large-format paver or porcelain tile floor reads calm here and wipes clean. Keep at least 900 mm of clearance behind chairs so people can pass while seated.
2. The lounge. Push this to the best view and the most shelter from wind. Timber or composite decking underfoot instantly softens the mood, and a low modular sofa keeps sightlines open. A simple pergola, sail or slatted overhead frame gives the "ceiling" that makes a lounge feel like a room.
3. The green buffer. Line the perimeter or one long side with deep planters and taller grasses. It screens neighbours, breaks wind, and gives you something to look at from indoors during winter months.
Draw the three zones on a scaled plan before you buy anything. If a zone shrinks below roughly 2 × 2 metres, merge it into a neighbour rather than squeezing it — two generous rooms always beat three cramped ones.
Before adding heavy planters, pergolas or paving, ask a licensed structural engineer to confirm your terrace's load capacity and waterproofing details for your specific building.
When floor area is tight, the walls are the only spare ground you have. Vertical planting adds volume and privacy without stealing a single square metre of walking space — but the three common systems behave very differently.
Modular panel systems hold the most plants and look the most dramatic. They also need irrigation, drainage and regular attention. Choose these only if you're comfortable maintaining a small technical system, or have someone who will.
Trellis with climbers is the low-tech favourite. A slatted timber or powder-coated steel frame, planted from deep ground-level containers, will cover a wall over a couple of seasons. Fewer moving parts, far less irrigation hardware, and it ages beautifully.
Pocket and rail planters sit in between — good for herbs and trailing foliage near a kitchen door, easy to swap seasonally, and simple to lift down when you want to repaint.
Whatever you pick, plan for water. Every vertical garden eventually drips, so keep a waterproof membrane behind it, route overflow to a drain, and avoid mounting directly onto untreated timber cladding.
One bright fitting on the wall turns a terrace into a car park. The trick is three quiet layers, all warm in tone, all aimed away from eye level.
Low layer: step lights, recessed floor washers and small spikes tucked into planters. This is what makes a terrace feel safe to walk across without lighting faces harshly.
Mid layer: a table lantern, portable rechargeable lamps, or a shielded uplight grazing a textured wall. This layer creates the pools of light people naturally sit inside.
High layer: catenary string lights or slim downlights within a pergola. Keep them dim — they're for atmosphere and orientation, not illumination.
Practical notes: stay around 2200–2700K for a warm, restful colour; use fittings rated for outdoor exposure in your climate; and put each layer on its own switch or dimmer so you can drop to just the low layer late at night. Any new outdoor circuit should be installed by a licensed electrician in line with local code.
Rooftops are harsher than gardens at ground level: more wind, faster drying, wider temperature swings. Plant selection matters less than three physical basics — container depth, soil mix and shelter.
Depth. Grasses and low perennials are generally content in 300–400 mm of soil. Shrubs want 450–600 mm. Small multi-stem trees need more again, plus a plan for anchoring against wind.
Soil. Standard garden soil is heavy and compacts. A lightweight container mix with good structure holds moisture without adding unnecessary load; top with a gravel or bark mulch to slow evaporation.
Shelter. A slatted screen that lets some air through works better than a solid one, which creates turbulence on the leeward side. Plant the toughest species on the windward edge and let them protect softer planting behind.
Palette ideas. Ornamental grasses for movement, compact evergreen shrubs for winter structure, tough perennials for seasonal colour, and one or two sculptural specimens as focal points. Always check hardiness and suitability with a local nursery — species that thrive in Southeast Alaska differ from those that suit warmer, drier regions.

modernterracegarden is an editorial publication. We do not sell plants, planters, building materials, furniture, installation work or design-build services, and we do not act as an architect, engineer, contractor or nursery. What we provide is free access to articles, layout notes, planting palettes, galleries and general design information, together with the ability to send us an enquiry.
Responses to enquiries are informational and editorial only. They do not create a professional, advisory, fiduciary or client relationship of any kind. If we ever introduce paid services, digital downloads or sponsored formats, the specific scope, price and terms will be disclosed clearly at the point of purchase before you commit, and sponsored or affiliate content will be labelled as such.
All editorial content currently published on the Site is free of charge. We do not request payment, card details or bank information anywhere on this Site, and we will never ask for payment by email, phone or message in connection with reading our articles. Treat any such request as fraudulent and report it to us.
Should paid offerings be introduced in future, prices will be shown in United States dollars (USD), will state clearly whether applicable taxes or fees are included, and payment will be processed by reputable third-party payment providers under their own terms — we do not store full payment card data. Prices, availability and promotional terms may change at any time before an order is placed; obvious pricing errors do not oblige us to complete a transaction, and any amount already paid in such a case will be refunded in full.
Because access to the Site is free, there is nothing to cancel and no payment to refund. You may stop using the Site at any time, and you may ask us to close out any open enquiry or delete your contact details by emailing support@modernterracegarden.blog.
If paid products or services are offered in the future, the following will apply unless stated otherwise at checkout: you may request cancellation and a full refund within 14 days of purchase where a digital product has not yet been downloaded or a service has not yet been delivered; approved refunds are issued to the original payment method within 5–10 business days; and statutory consumer rights under applicable U.S. state law and, where relevant, EU/UK consumer law are not affected. Refund requests should be sent to support@modernterracegarden.blog with your order details.
